What Is a Postpartum Doula?
A postpartum doula provides non-medical support to families after the birth of a baby. Depending on the family’s needs, this may include newborn care, feeding support, emotional support, light household help, meal preparation, education and simply being a calm, experienced person in the room.
Postpartum doulas do not replace midwives, doctors, nurses, lactation consultants or other healthcare professionals. Instead, they work alongside a family’s existing support and care team.
The goal is not to have all the answers. It is to help families feel supported, informed and more confident as they find their way through those early weeks with a new baby.

Meet Candice Johnson

Candice Johnson has been living and breathing all things birth since she was first invited to attend a birth more than 15 years ago.
Through years of learning alongside traditional birth attendants, midwives and doulas, Candice developed a deep respect for physiological birth and the importance of protecting the space around it. Her work naturally grew to include breastfeeding support, and she soon became someone midwives and doulas called when families were experiencing feeding challenges.
That work brought Candice into people's homes during those early postpartum days, where she found herself naturally stepping into the role of a postpartum doula. She loved supporting families in this tender time, but it wasn't until she had children of her own that she truly understood just how much support new parents need.
Becoming a parent gave Candice a firsthand understanding of the exhaustion, vulnerability and uncertainty that can come with bringing a baby home. What she had always understood intellectually, she now experienced herself.
Today, postpartum support holds a special place in Candice's work. She believes that the early weeks and months after birth deserve just as much care and attention as birth itself, particularly at a time when families are often expected to simply figure it out on their own.
Candice loves supporting families as they find their footing, gain confidence and consciously build their relationships with one another. Her approach is practical, compassionate and rooted in the belief that sometimes the most meaningful support is simply being there.
