Training Structure
🌿 Pre-Training Online Content: Videos, readings, and reflection prompts to ground you in the basics.
🌀 We’ll kick off with 2 immersive in-person days full of engaging lectures, lively discussion, hands-on practice, and role play. Then we’ll stay connected through 6 weekly, 2-hour sessions with meaningful self-directed homework in between.
🤲 Certification Pathway: After training, you’ll be supported to complete client experiences, reading, and reflective work to earn your Certified Birth Doula (CBD) designation.

Birth Doula Certification
Our certification process is designed to be achievable, supportive, and meaningful. This is an optional add on to our Foundational Birth Doula Training course.
To get certified. You will complete:

Attend the full Bloom Doula training (including in-person sessions and all online classes).

Gain hands-on client support experience.

Complete assigned reflections, readings, videos, and podcasts.

Begin the process of building your doula business.

Submit a Final paper.
Once completed, you’ll receive certification as a Bloom Certified Birth Doula (BCBD).

Become a Certified Birth Doula
Families need support during pregnancy, birth, and the early days of parenting; doulas help provide that support. Our Foundational Birth Doula Training is designed to give you both the knowledge and the hands-on skills to guide families with confidence, compassion, and professionalism.
This course blends self-paced online preparation with two days of in-person training in Vancouver, BC, followed by 6 weeks of online classes. You’ll learn about the physiology of birth, comfort measures, medical interventions, postpartum recovery, and the practical steps of building a doula practice. Our Story
Bloom has been a trusted name in birth work since the early 2000s.
Over the years, we have supported hundreds of families and trained many of the doulas now working throughout Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Our work is rooted in experience, community, and a deep belief that birth support should feel both informed and genuinely human.
Morag Hastings has been working as a birth doula and photographer in Vancouver for over two decades. She has attended more than 500 births and has been teaching and mentoring since 2015. Her approach is grounded and practical, shaped by real experience in the birth room, and focused on what actually matters when someone is in labour.
Outside of birth work, Morag’s life is full. She is a mother of two adult children and three teenagers, including two step sons, and shares her home with what she calls the golden children, her two very loved dogs. She cares deeply about community, and when she has the time, you will find her in the garden or at the pottery wheel.
Jessica is a Vancouver-based birth doula who has supported over 200 births. She has worked with families across a wide range of experiences and brings both depth and adaptability to her work. As a childbirth educator with Bloom, she has taught hundreds of families, and that experience shows in how she teaches. She is clear, direct, and compassionate, with a way of explaining things that helps people feel both informed and capable.
Jessica’s work is grounded in a human-rights-based approach that centres bodily autonomy and informed choice. She believes that when people have clear, realistic information, they are better able to make decisions that feel right for them. She is also deeply engaged in broader conversations around birth, including public health, access to midwifery care, and place of birth options. She is a mother of one and a proud East Vancouver community member, and has been part of the Bloom team since 2021.
This training was created in response to a clear need for high-quality, in-person doula education that goes beyond theory. We focus on building real skills, real confidence, and a clear path into this work.
This is not just about learning information. It is about learning how to walk into a birth space and know how to show up.

How do I become a certified birth doula in Vancouver?
To become a certified doula in Vancouver, start with our Foundational Birth Doula Training at Birth by Bloom. This hybrid course blends in-person learning with online sessions so you gain both hands-on experience and a solid understanding of physiology, comfort measures, and the emotional aspects of birth. After completing the training, you can choose to pursue Bloom Birth Doula Certification by supporting clients, finishing reflective assignments, and demonstrating your readiness to serve families with confidence.
Do I need experience before taking the doula training?
No prior experience is required. Our course is designed for anyone who feels called to birth work — whether you’re a parent, caregiver, health professional, or simply curious about supporting families through pregnancy and birth. You’ll receive all the foundational knowledge, mentorship, and resources you need to begin your journey as a birth doula.
What’s the difference between the Birth Doula Course and the Mentorship Program?
The Foundational Birth Doula Training is open to everyone and provides the education and tools needed to start your practice.
The Doula Mentorship Program, led personally by Morag Hastings, is a separate and selective year-long program designed for doulas who are already taking clients and ready to deepen their skills. Not all trainees are accepted into mentorship — it’s by application only and focuses on real-time client support, business development, and ongoing professional growth.
Where is the training held?
Our in-person doula trainings are held in Vancouver, BC, with additional online sessions offered via Zoom. The hybrid format makes it accessible for participants across the Lower Mainland and British Columbia. You’ll receive detailed location and scheduling information upon registration.
How long does the doula certification take?
The full Foundational Doula Training runs over approximately 8 weeks, including pre-course online preparation, two immersive in-person days, and six weekly online classes.
The certification process continues as you complete client births, readings, and reflections at your own pace. Most participants are certified within 3–6 months.
We also recognize that everyone learns differently. Our training is designed to be supportive and accessible, with a variety of learning styles built in. You do not need to be highly academic, and there is not a heavy focus on reading or writing to complete your certification.
Do I get support after the training ends?
Yes! Bloom offers continued guidance even after your training wraps up. You’ll stay connected through community groups, follow-up calls, and the opportunity to apply for Morag’s exclusive mentorship program. Many of our graduates continue learning and growing within the Bloom community.
Can I take the course if I don’t live in Vancouver?
Yes. While the training includes in-person sessions in Vancouver, participants from across BC (and beyond) are welcome. Many doulas travel for the immersive portion and complete the remaining online classes from home. If you’re outside the Lower Mainland, you can still join our community and choose whether to participate in local client referrals.
Is the Bloom Doula Certification recognized?
Yes. Bloom’s certification is widely respected in the Vancouver birth community and recognized by local doulas, midwives, and care providers. It reflects practical skills, ethical professionalism, and client-centered care, giving you the confidence to begin working right away.
Who teaches the doula course and mentorship?
All Bloom trainings are led by Morag Hastings, a birth doula and photographer with over a decade of experience and more than 500 births attended and Jessica Medrea a local birth doula who has been working with Bloom since 2021. Do I need experience?
No. We will teach you what you need to know.
Do I need medical training?
No. Birth doulas do not perform medical tasks.
Can I work as a doula after this?
Yes, 100% you will be ready to support families during their births.
What if I’m nervous?
That’s completely normal! Don't worry we are all doulas - it will be a very cozy, welcoming space we promise.
