What is a Postpartum Doula?
Those early weeks after birth can feel tender, overwhelming, and full of change. Our group of postpartum doulas serving Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is here to offer steady, practical support as you find your footing with a new baby.
We support families in a way that’s grounded, respectful, and responsive to what you actually need in the moment. That might look like newborn care while you rest, help with feeding, emotional support, or light household tasks that make the day feel a little more manageable. Sometimes it’s simply having someone there who understands and can reassure you that what you’re experiencing is normal.
All of the doulas listed here are independent practitioners, and each brings their own experience and approach. We support all families, all feeding choices, and believe deeply in informed, non-judgmental care.
You don’t have to do this alone. Postpartum support can make a real difference.
If you need help picking a postpartum doula please email us at hello@birthbybloom.com.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a birth doula?
A birth doula provides continuous, non-medical support during pregnancy, labour, and birth. This can look like emotional support, hands-on comfort measures, guidance for partners, and helping you understand your options so you can make informed decisions. A birth doula supports you and your partner and works alongside your care provider.
What is a postpartum doula?
A postpartum doula supports families in the early weeks after birth. This may include newborn care, feeding support, light household help, emotional check-ins, and space for you to rest and recover. Postpartum doulas help ease the transition home and support the whole family, not just the baby.
When should I hire a birth doula?
Many families reach out in the second trimester, but some connect earlier or later. Doulas tend to book up, especially around popular due dates, so it’s a good idea to start looking once you know you want that kind of support.

When should I hire a postpartum doula?
You can reach out at any point during pregnancy — or even after your baby arrives, if there’s availability. Many families find it helpful to have postpartum support in place before birth, especially for the first few weeks at home.
Do doulas replace my partner or care provider?
No. Doulas work with your partner and care team. They don’t provide medical care or make decisions for you. Instead, they help support you emotionally and physically, and encourage your partner to stay involved and confident.
Do you work with hospital, home, and birth centre births?
Yes. Our birth doulas support families planning hospital births, home births. We do not have any birth centres in BC. We are not registered at any one hospital so we can follow your care no matter where you end up giving birth. Postpartum doulas support families wherever they are settling in with their new baby.
Doulas charge different rates why?
Every doula brings different training, experience, and services to their work. Some may include extra postpartum support, or extra resources, while others focus solely on birth. Rates also reflect factors like location, availability, and years of experience.
The important thing is finding a doula whose approach, experience, and support style feels right for you, not just the price. If you’d like, we can help you connect with a few doulas so you can compare and see what works best for your family.
How do I choose the right doula?
Connection matters. We encourage meeting with a few doulas, asking questions, and noticing how you feel during the conversation. The “right” doula is someone you feel comfortable with and supported by. We have this article that goes into more detail with what to look for when hiring a doula.
